The deep channel that separates Bali from Lombok also happens to be home to one of the most important imaginary lines in the world: The Wallace Line. It follows the subterranean fault lines: from the southern reaches of Bali and Lombok up to the deep Makassar Straits that split Sulawesi and Borneo.
Wikipedia explains it very, but in short: The Wallace Line describes that in south east Asia there is a very strong divide in occurrence of species when comparing everything from Bali westward, and everything from Lombok eastward. e.g. large mammals characterizing Sumatra and Java are: Tigers, Elephants and Rhinos.
The best known of all Wallace's work in the latter field is his proposal of "Wallace's Line": a boundary separating the faunal regions of Asia (to the west of it) and Australasia (to the east). The line runs through the Lombok Strait between the islands of Bali and Lombok, then up between Borneo and Sulawesi, and from there continues northward
The line runs through Indonesia, between Borneo and Sulawesi (Celebes), and through the Lombok Strait between Bali and Lombok. The distance between Bali and Lombok is small, about 35 kilometres (22 mi). The distributions of many bird species observe the line, since many birds do not cross even the smallest stretches of open ocean water.
Lombok Strait is located between the islands of Bali and Lombok, which is part of an east-west series of islands from Lombok to Timor that is collectively known as Nusa Tenggara . Nusa Tenggara is strongly affected by the Asian-Australian monsoon system that is characterized by six-month reversals in the winds associated with the southeast and

He found that islands as close together as Bali and Lombok had completely different animals on them. These two islands are only 22 miles apart - about the distance between York and Leeds - and yet not even birds travel between them. To account for the phenomenon, Wallace proposed an imaginary line to divide the region into two parts.
Homo erectus Indonesia consists of parts of the Sunda Shelf, extending from mainland Asia and forming the world's largest submerged continental shelf; a deep-water channel charting what is known as Wallace's Line roughly running between the islands of Kalimantan and Sulawesi, and between the islands of Bali and Lombok; and parts of the
